CURRENT RIVER

MISSOURI

CONSERVATION HISTORY

The Current River is the most biologically significant in the Midwest. The Current River is home to an impressive array of plants and animals, including more than 35 globally unique species. Some of these species are found nowhere else on earth; others have their healthiest populations in this region. It is also a major breeding habitat for migrating and nesting birds.

Unsustainable agricultural and forestry practices pose significant threats to the Current River.  The Nature Conservancy works directly with private landowners to promote sustainable land use, primarily through conservation easements. Additionally, the Conservancy collaborates with local farmers to develop affordable and sustainable methods to keep livestock out of the river and prevent streambank erosion. The Conservancy has worked with partners like the Ozark National Scenic Riverways to restore hardwood forests and canebreaks.

MY VISIT IN APRIL 2024

In early spring, hardly anyone was around and I enjoyed the quiet river. Down the river is the Blue Spring, which contributes a staggering 90 million gallons of water daily to the Current River and ranks 6th largest in Missouri. Once called the “Spring of the Summer Sky”, it displays a vivid deep blue color attributed to its depth and mineral content. The color changes hue based on storm run-off and the amount of available light penetrating its surface. At 310 feet it is the deepest spring in the state.

For perspective, the Statue of Liberty could be placed in the spring and only her torch would be visible above the surface.
